Around this time every November, I start to get used to everyone in a mustache. For those of you who are struggling to learn how to eat and drink with a mustache, we offer these Victorian mustache cups, perfectly practical for a well-groomed gentleman. We are supporting our friend by telling his story on this blog. Please read below.
On Tuesday, November 1, I stopped shaving my moustache.
Last year, my daughter Jennifer introduced me to the phenomenally fun and successful fundraiser for Prostate Cancer — Movember. During this month, tens, if not hundreds of thousands of men all over the world will grow a moustache, and early in December we will gather to mock and admire the results … and I guess choose some winners. Meanwhile, we are asking our friends to donate whatever they feel they can to the cause of Prostate Cancer.
Through the Movember Foundation and its men’s health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada, Movember is funding world class awareness, research, educational and support programs which would otherwise not be possible.
Why am I so passionate about men’s health?
On average men live 4-5 years less than women
1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year in Canada
Most of us guys will die with it, if not because of it. My brother-in-law Cliff fought it for 14 years, but it got him, and it is in Cliff’s memory that I am doing this.
We only have a month to grow Mos and raise awareness and funds, so please come along for the ride.
For more details on how the funds raised from previous campaigns have been used and the impact Movember is having please click on the links below:
James Bruce Findlay DFC was born at Shawville Quebec (QC), son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Findlay. He lived at Fitzroy Harbour Ontario (ON) and was educated there and at Kemptville ON, Agricultural College.
In June 1941 Findlay enlisted, in the RCAF, in Ottawa and graduated, as an air gunner from No. 1 Bombing & Gunnery School at Mont Joli QC, in December 1942.
After arriving overseas in January 1943, he was eventually posted to No.97 Pathfinder Squadron, Bomber Command. After completing 45 dangerous and death defying missions over enemy territory against heavily defended targets, Pilot Officer Findlay was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).

We had a great day with Judith Miller, author of the 2011-2012 Antiques Price Guide, on Tuesday. We loaned Judith a load of interesting and quirky antiques to aid her appearance on Breakfast Television Tuesday morning video.citytv.com/breakfasttv/ (she supplied her own fake!). She used our Chinese vase to discuss the rising interest in Chinese antiques and our czech glass lamp to elaborate on vintage decorating trends. We want to thank Manda Group mandagroup.com for supplying Miller and organizing this event.
Following her Breakfast Television event, Miller came to Toronto Antiques on King for a book signing, a media interview, and a free identification clinic. We all had a great time, had entirely too much coffee and learned a lot from Miller.
Although we are only blessed with visits from Miller once every few years, we do always have an expert on staff who can talk with you about your treasures. We are always buying interesting jewellery, silver, china, glass and porcelain. Please contact us to make an appointment!

Although we try, we can’t really say it is the Christmas season yet. However, this year we are calling this pre-Christmas season the “listening season.” Tread quietly and you will hear the faintly whispered hints from loved ones. Be a good listener and you will be a good giver, which is really the best gift of all.
Red Rubies are the Colours of Christmas
Happy listening everyone! To facilitate your “listening” we have set up a wish list and gift registry cynthiafindlay.com. Encourage those you know to set one up or set up one yourself. We look forward to seeing you for Christmas shopping!
