Winter Sports Figurines
[slideshow id=4 w=328 h=428]
Now that there is a blanket of snow on the ground and the Olympics are in full swing, we are really getting into a winter sports fever here at Toronto Antiques on King & The Cynthia Findlay Collection! Even though spring is around the corner, it’s not too late to admire some of these beautifully rendered winter sports figurines.
Gold medal winning ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir made Canada proud with their elegant moves on ice. This skating figurine by the German porcelain makers Schaubach Kunst elegantly shows off a delicately executed elongated spiral position. Good luck to Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette tonight as she starts her Olympic quest, despite the sad loss of her mother on Sunday.
This 1920s Italian skiing figurine stands with careless aplomb holding his skis, reminiscent of the great Alpine skiers from Olympics history.
Let’s all keep hope alive for Team Canada as the men’s hockey team plays Germany tonight. This lovely and playfully young hockey figurine by Lladro brings to mind the youth of our country’s love and passion for the game.
Last but not least, this Wedgewood mug depicts a touch-bearing Grecian figure. Wasn’t it inspirational to watch Gretzky carry the torch to light the cauldron during the Olympic opening ceremonies?
Stop by Toronto Antiques on King to have a look at these Olympic-themed pieces in person.
